The NET Framework is a platform, created by Microsoft, which contains library of classes (the Framework Class Library) and run-time environment (the Common Language Runtime). The NET Framework version 1.1 provides everything that is needed in order to run applications and services, created using the NET Framework.

Some of its key features are:

• Side-by-side execution – multiple versions of the same component can be executed on a single computer

• IP version 6 (IPv6) support

NET Framework version 2.0 provides the runtime environment needed in order to start and run applications developed for the .NET Framework.

• Support for wider range of browsers and devices

• Improved scalability and better performance
• Better caching

NET Framework 3 includes everything necessary in order to run applications developed for the .NET Framework. This latest version combines the stability and great performance of 
Framework version 2.0 with the newest web technologies.

NET Framework 3 comes with Windows Vista and be easily installed/uninstalled.
The Microsoft .NET Framework 4 redistributable package installs the .NET Framework runtime and associated files that are required to run and develop applications to target the .NET Framework 4.

The .NET Framework 4 works side by side with older Framework versions. Applications that are based on earlier versions of the Framework will continue to run on the version targeted by default.
