The NET Framework is a platform, created by Microsoft, which contains library of classes (the Framework Class Library) and run-time environment (the Common Language Runtime). The NET Framework version 1.1 provides everything that is needed in order to run applications and services, created using the NET Framework.
Some of its key features are:

- Side-by-side execution – multiple versions of the same component can be executed on a single computer
- Enhanced security
- IP version 6 (IPv6) support

Framework version 2.0 with the newest web technologies.
Some of the new features added to the .NET Framework 3 are:

- RSS and ATOM support
- New graphic features
The Microsoft .NET Framework 4 redistributable package installs the .NET Framework runtime and associated files that are required to run and develop applications to target the .NET Framework 4.
The .NET Framework 4 works side by side with older Framework versions. Applications that are based on earlier versions of the Framework will continue to run on the version targeted by default.

- Enhancements to ASP.NET
- Improvements in Windows Presentation Foundation
